Stigma and the Affective Strategies of Public Health: The Case of Smoking

The deployment of stigma in public health initiatives and campaigns is a controversial topic. On one hand, public health discourse and practice has emphasised the burdens of stigmatisation and its negative health effects. On the other hand, some commentators focused specifically on tobacco control have argued that certain forms of stigmatisation can have health-promoting effects. They argue that the de-normalisation of smoking, recognised as one of the great successes of public health, has involved the stigmatisation of smokers. The debate about stigma has largely been carried out in an ethical register. However, this presentation, which focuses on tobacco control, aims to rethink stigmatisation in terms of the production and distribution of emotions such as anger, shame, sympathy and hope. It draws on recent theorisations of collective emotion and the cultural politics of feeling to argue that affective strategies are central to public health.

Föreläsare: Helen Keane is Senior Lecturer in Sociology, Australian National Univiersity in Canberra. Her areas of research interest include Social and Cultural Studies of Health and Medicine, Sociology of Addiction and Drug Use, Embodiment, Gender and Feminist Theory. She is author of What¿s Wrong with Addiction(2002) and regularly publishes in journals such as Health, International Journal of Drug Policy, Contemporary Drug Problems and Biosocieties
