Vid institutionen bedrivs forskning, utbildning och samverkan inom en rad områden. Här finns forskning om arbetsmarknad, arbetsliv, välfärdsfrågor, sociala rörelser, hållbar utveckling, miljöpolitik, rättssociologi samt brottslighet och social kontroll. Utbildningar erbjuds inom en rad områden såsom sociologi, arbetsvetenskap, personalvetenskap, kriminologi och human resource management. Institutionen har också omfattande åtaganden på flera av Göteborgs universitets utbildningsprogram, inte minst inom lärarutbildningen. Samverkan och utvecklingsprojekt bedrivs både inom forskning och utbildning med partners inom det privata näringslivet och offentlig sektor.
The Department of sociology and work science has a new guest professor, Professor Urmi Nanda Biswas from The M.S University of Baroda, India. Professor Biswas will be at our department for five months. During this time she, along with other commitments, will meet students, researchers and hold seminars. A brief introduction of Professor Biswas follows.
Dr. Urmi Nanda Biswas is the Professor and Head, Department of Psychology, the M. S. University of Baroda, Gujarat, India. She is presently associated with the Department of Sociology and Work Science as a Guest Professor. Her collaboration with the department dates back to 2012 with colleagues (Dr. Karin Allard and Prof. Annika Härenstam), has recently received a planning grant from Gothenburg Centre for Global Development (GCGD), and a guest professor grant from FORTE. She is also a steering committee member of Sweden India Gender Network (SIGN).
She has been a Commonwealth Academic Staff Fellow (CASF) in UK and has been the recipient of UK India Educational Research Initiative (UKIERI) Collaborative Delivery Award from British Council.She has also been associated with the Clinical and Health Psychology Research Centre, Roehampton University as a Senior Research Fellow.
Prof. Biswas’s broad research interest includes Applied Social and Health Psychology, Organizational Behavior, and Human Resource Development. She has published a book on “Social Psychology of Health: Issues and Concerns in India”. She has been the director of the Post Graduate Diploma Course on Human Resource Development offered from her University for HR professionals for more than 10 years now.
Her research in OB includes Gender and Leadership, Stress, HR issues at Workplace and its consequences. She is currently engaged with multiple research projects. The collaborative project with GU compares organizational values across different sectors in Sweden and India, which makes the workplace attractive for existing and potential employees. Among the national projects, one is on exploring the social perception and causes of sex selective abortion; the other is with people living with HIV and AIDS, and the third is on shared spaces and boundaries between Hindu and Muslim communities in India.
Prof. Biswas will present herself at the Arbetsvetarkollegiet on 10th November . She will hold a seminar at the Centre for Global HRM at 21st November and one more in Work Life Seminar on 17th February,2015 on, ”Corporate Social Responsibility as a Mandatory Law for Profit Organizations in India: A Boon or a Bane?”
